Aquarela do Brasil

Well, that was interesting.

Sam Lowry (Jonathan Pryce) is an office worker in this highly dsyfunctional bureaucratic, consumerist, dystopian nightmare. At night, however, he dreams of soaring through the skies and rescuing a beautiful young woman. One day, he discovers Jill Layton (Kim Greist), a truck driver who’s trying to seek justice for Archibald Buttle (Brian Miller), a citizen killed due to a simple technological error.

Her father Dale (Joe Chrest) has remarried this awful woman named Janet (Carla Gugino)(yes, that is a Rocky Horror reference) and now has a stepsister named Taffy (Liza Soberano). Lisa ends up spending a lot of time hanging out in the bachelor cemetery, where there’s a grave featuring a bust of a handsome young man.

Unholy Night

A New Christmas Classic (Massive Spoilers)

I’m going to do something a little different with this review by essentially giving you my conclusion first. The Sacrifice Game, co-written and directed by Jenn Wexler, is a great movie that you should watch immediately, then read this review. Much like The Cabin in the Woods, it’s a movie where it’s better if you go in blind. Just about the only thing safe to tell you is that it’s a horror movie about a cult going to an all girls boarding school during Christmas break for a human sacrifice to raise a demon.

This You Call a Wonderful Knife?! (Spoilers)

I went to see a Christmas movie in November. I’m kind of ashamed of myself for that, because I firmly believe the Christmas season doesn’t start until the day after Thanksgiving. I had to do it, however. The movie was called It’s A Wonderful Knife, a play on my favorite Christmas movie of all time. As a bonus, it was directed by Tyler MacIntyre, who directed and co-wrote Tragedy Girls, and written by Michael Kennedy, who co-wrote the script for Freaky.

In the Flesh

An Ode to a Great Director

Thirty-eight years ago, Stuart Gordon came out with a film called Re-Animator, which became a cult hit and launched his career as a film director. Now, a film honoring his work has been released. It’s titled Suitable Flesh and had been a project that Gordon himself had tried to make, but ultimately couldn’t. It’s an adaptation of a H.P. Lovecraft story, so the screenplay written by Dennis Paoli. It has all of their hallmarks in it (see here for more details). Barbara Crampton was an executive producer on the film, in addition to playing a supporting character.
