An Ode to a Great Director

Thirty-eight years ago, Stuart Gordon came out with a film called Re-Animator, which became a cult hit and launched his career as a film director. Now, a film honoring his work has been released. It’s titled Suitable Flesh and had been a project that Gordon himself had tried to make, but ultimately couldn’t. It’s an adaptation of a H.P. Lovecraft story, so the screenplay written by Dennis Paoli. It has all of their hallmarks in it (see here for more details). Barbara Crampton was an executive producer on the film, in addition to playing a supporting character.

A Surprisingly Enjoyable Movie (Spoilers)

For the past couple of years, I’ve reviewed a Halloween movie to celebrate the big day. Though there are still plenty of installments left, I decided to forgo that this year. There are multiple reasons for that. One is how if I were to do another Halloween review, it would cover both Halloween IIs. If memory serves, they both have their moments, but aren’t entries I’m in a huge hurry to rewatch.

Best Do-Over Ever

The season that started it all (Spoilers)

I can’t believe I’ve seriously published 200 of these reviews. My original plan was to review Let Me In, which for a while was my favorite movie back when I was 12. Except, to do the review justice, I would have to reread the book it was based on, Låt den rätte komma in, and watch the Swedish film adaptation, maybe even the recent tv adaptation. I’m probably going to do all of that someday, but I just don’t have the time at the moment. So, then the question became what could I do instead? I quickly came up with an answer.

Celebrating A Special Day With A Special Film (Spoilers)

13 Fanboy follows Kelsie Voorhees (Hayley Greenbauer), who’s the granddaughter of Friday the 13th actor Deborah Voorhees. While Kelsie herself is fictional, her grandmother is not. Voorhees (yes, her last name was a factor in getting her cast, but not the only one) played Tina in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning. In addition to playing herself in 13 Fanboy, Voorhees also directed and co-wrote the script with Joel Paul Reising.

A Killer Movie

Maybe Not The Most Original, But Still Well Done (Spoilers)

You really need to admire the resiliency of the slasher movies. Whenever it seems like the genre is on its last legs, something comes along to breathe new life into it. The audience is growing familiar with genre tropes, let’s have fun with that in Scream. The whole post-meta thing is growing stale, let’s combine a slasher movie with a classic film.

It’s Kaitly Dever vs. the greys time (Spoilers)

Brynn Adams (Kaitlyn Dever) is a young woman living by herself in this awesome looking, but isolated lake house. Brynn is a pariah in her hometown for reasons that gradually become clearer as the movie goes on. One night, Brynn wakes up and discovers that there’s an alien inside her house. Pretty soon, there’s a whole host of alien invaders that Brynn has to fight off.

The Not So Final Chapter

John Wick (Keanu Reeves) has recovered from the injuries that should have killed him ten times over in the last movie and, with the help of the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne), is continuing his war against the High Table. In response, the Marquis Vinent Bisset de Gramont (Bill Skarsgård) is granted special powers to take down John once and for all.
