The good, the bad, and the guy with the gun

A look back at the earlier Evil Dead films (Spoilers)

With Evil Dead Rise right around the corner, I thought it was time to rewatch what’s come before—at least in terms of the films. I wanted to hold off on watching the tv show until another time because I wanted to finish my first draft by the first week of April. Plus, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. So, here’s my look at the first four Evil Dead movies, with only a few elements related to the show.

What did you do in quarantine?

Well, I’ve given up on not mentioning the pandemic (Spoilers)

Two best friends, Parker Mason (Gideon Adlon) and Miri Woodlow (Bethlehem Milion), have decided to do their COVID-19 quarantining at this gorgeous lake house. From their first scene, it’s apparent that Parker and Miri have very different ideas regarding safety precautions. Miri’s all about wearing a mask and staying six feet apart from one another. Parker, meanwhile, treats the quarantine more like an extended vacation.

Cokey the Bear

Only you can prevent forest fires…by doing cocaine. (Spoiler)

As unbelievable as it sounds, Cocaine Bear is based on a true story. There was a drug smuggler named Andrew C. Thornton II (played in the film by Matthew Rhys) who dropped a load of cocaine into the forests near Knoxville, Tennessee. The cocaine was eaten by a bear, nicknamed Pablo Escobear or Cokey the Bear, though the reality is much less amusing for reasons I’ll go over later. The rest of the movie is fictional, however.

Batdance

And I don’t mean the Batusi (Spoilers)

One of the movies I loved growing up was Batman (1989), directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton. Over the years, I’ve also come to regard Batman Returns as an underrated film. So today, I will do something I’ve never done before. Review a comic book. Specifically, Batman ’89, which takes place in the continuity of the Burton films while ignoring the Joel Schumacher entries.

Elora Danan

Is what this show should have been called. (Spoilers)

In this sequel to the 1988 film of the same name, we learn that the good times following the defeat of evil Queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh) didn’t last long because shortly afterward, Willow (Warwick Davis) had a vision of an ancient evil destroying Chosen One Elora Danan. So the baby was put into hiding, with her true identity hidden even from herself. The series then jumps ahead about 16 years into the future.

When you wish upon a star

After 11 years, Puss is back. (Spoilers)

The plot of Puss In Boots: The Last Wish kicks off when the title character (Antonio Banderas), a dashing feline who laughs in the face of death, discovers that he’s blown through eight of his nine lives. So yeah, a children’s movie about coming to terms with your mortality. Brace yourself, because if you thought Shrek (Mike Meyers) It’s a Wonderful Life-ing got dark, you ain’t seen anything yet.

A Child’s Plaything Part 2

A review of Chucky season 2. (Spoilers)(NSFW)

After a brief prologue, season two of Chucky picks up six months after the last season left off. Jake Wheeler (Zackary Arthur) has moved away with a new foster family, though he and Devon Evans (Björgvin Arnarson) decide to keep in touch after a steamy goodbye. Lexy Cross (Alyvia Alyn Lind) has started taking drugs to cope with the death of her beloved Junior Wheeler (Teo Briones) and attending therapy sessions with the rest of her family.
